FAQ's
What kind of equipment does the Pilates Method use?
The Pilates Method can be done in one of two ways, or a combination of both. One way is exercise with spring resistant machines. There are over 500 exercises and four different pieces of equipment that utilize spring resistance. The other "equipment" is the mat. The Matwork consists of a series of floor exercises designed to strengthen the body's power center or "Powerhouse". Each exercise calls on the student to perform various exercises with a limited number of repetitions and to make smooth transitions from one move into the next. The Pilates Method is a "system" of training and should incorporate a variety of exercises and equipment.
Our equipment is hand-crafted and classically made by PEAK Pilates. It strictly adheres to the time-proven dimensional relationships of Joseph Pilates' original equipment. We are fully equipped for system-based Pilates training including Reformers, Cadillacs, High Ladder Barrels, Wunda Chairs, and High Chairs, etc.
Mat classes are designed to be complementary to the full training program and are an efficient way to experience the Method when private instruction on the apparatus is difficult to arrange.
Once learned, the mat routine is a very vigorous and challenging workout that can be done independently.
While on the mat, the body supplies its own resistance to movement, with the use of gravity. The mat classes offer a group experience allowing you to learn and master the foundational principles of Pilates. Exercises may also be done using various apparatuses that offer handholds, supports, and positioning bars and allow exercisers to stretch farther and into different positions. The equipment may place resistance against motion and may also offer assistance to an exerciser's movements.
Should I workout on both the mat and the equipment?
While the Pilates mat and equipment exercises are designed to work together, benefits are still achieved through work done on the mat only. Since the body has to find its own resistance and its correct alignment on the mat, the mat work out (when done properly) is actually a much harder.
Can I practice Pilates without an instructor?
The Pilates program is best done one on one (at first) with an instructor who can evaluate your performance and correct it as needed. Before beginning a Pilates program, however, make sure the instructor has been fully trained and certified.
Learn how many years he or she has spent studying and teaching the technique and what expertise the instructor has regarding pregnancy or specific injuries.
How many times a week should I do Pilates?
The Pilates Method should be done 2-3 times a week and can be practiced in a variety of ways. You can take private lessons and/or group lessons on the equipment, and/or do group mat classes. As soon as a basic mat routine is learned, you can begin practicing the Method at home daily.
Do I still need to do my aerobic/weight training?
Extra training to supplement the Pilates Method is optional and dependent upon ones goals. If you practice the method 2-3 times a week with total focus and awareness, additional training should not be necessary.
What should I wear?
To workout on either mat or equipment, you should wear comfortable, non-baggy clothing that does not restrict movement. Most commonly, Pilates is done barefoot or with a thin pair of socks on.
